A specialization of adult worker and employee. Each instance of public sector worker is a person employed by a local, state (or provincial), or national government. This collection includes those who are employed directly in government administration (for example, elected and appointed officials, tax officers, and police and military personnel) as well as those who are employed in support services wholly funded by the government (for example, postal employees, public school teachers, firefighters, and unionized government workers). Although numerous subcollections of public sector worker constitute instances of type of profession (q.v.), work in the public sector displays too much variation for public sector worker to be considered an occupation-type in its own right.
