Italy, a medium-sized independent country in the south of the Europe. The territory of the Italian mainland is a boot-shaped peninsula in the the Mediterranean Sea, dividing the the Tyrrhenian Sea from the the Adriatic Sea. Sardinia and Sicily are major Italian islands. As with all instances of independent country, this term denotes Italy as a country qua geographical, qua political, and qua historical entity.
