Intransitive Subject Control Frame

Unique Tag: [ IntransitiveSubjectControlFrame ]

This frame is used for words that subcategorize for (i) an NP and (ii) an infinitive phrase which is controlled by the subject of the matrix clause, i.e. the semantic subject of the infinitive clause is identical to the syntactic subject of the matrix clause. Example: 'Mary promised John to go to the party'. Note that this could be paraphrased as 'Mary promised John that *Mary* (not John) go to the party', thus that the *subject* (not object) of the matrix clause is the one going to the party. Contrast this with Object Control Frame.
